Masterpieces – The History of a Period

The Other World, an Escape (146 x 97 cm – 1977)

The theme here is much inspired by surrealism, and why not? Two color ranges dominate the work, reddish, yellow and bluey ochres and bluish, green and whitish grays. In the foreground is a bay, with a boat, and a whole demolished town, with almost no human presence. In the mid-ground one is in Paradise. A crowd is gathered in prayer and a saint is on his knees, and an infants’ school is alive with children and a family together. The rich composition is pyramidal, with a dried-up tree trunk on which hangs a cassock and a curtain over the bay. In the depths of the sky there are red and yellow-ochre spheres together with a Lebanese flag.

In the center of the work, the hero wings towards eternity to join his fellows. The medium is rich and laid on thick, showing a mountain afar. This is a call for freedom, a patriotic poem, a melody of faith and of holiness.

The hero and the clerical cassock bring together earth and heaven.
